Fragile: Handle with Care

This painting is about what breaks most easily — and what is therefore most worth protecting. A stained-glass window is fragility itself: thin glass held together in many separate pieces, alive only because light passes through it. The tall vertical format, closed by a semicircular arch, holds the whole construction together even though every cell within it exists on its own.

Beside the glass there is a small living thing with nothing to defend itself but its own lightness. The butterfly does not argue with the weight of stone and metal; it simply enters the beam of light and becomes part of it. Sand-textured paste gives the surface a tactile, almost granular presence, and against that density fragility reads as something other than weakness: more often than not, it is what holds us together.
