“Autumn Mosaic” is about the brief time when everything blazes before it cools. These days matter precisely because there are so few of them: it’s still warm, you can still walk unhurried, yet the air has changed and holds a sense of an ending. The foliage breaks into hundreds of separate marks — scarlet, ochre, gold — and out of them a continuous glow assembles itself.
The round format gathers the woods into a whole: like looking through a window, or into a bowl, and taking in all that colour at once, with no edges and nothing beyond. Dark trunks hold the composition without arguing with the fire of the canopy. A work about staying a while in the last of the warmth, without rushing what is going to pass anyway.
