“Contrasts” is a work inspired by life itself, which is woven from opposites. Dark, almost cosmic fields of the canvas are cut through by flashes of light and the shimmer of gold leaf: black and white meet so closely here that the boundary between them becomes nearly imperceptible. The mixed media — oil, acrylic and gold leaf — builds the surface in layers, from deep shadow to golden glow, drawing the eye to search for that invisible line where one passes into the other.
This is where the meaning of the painting lies: the shift between light and darkness often happens unnoticed, and it matters not to miss the moment when it occurs. However dark it may be all around, light is always somewhere near — it does not disappear, but only waits to be seen. The work holds this fragile balance, a reminder of the hope hidden in the very depth of the dark.
